Namibe province, the epicenter of Angola’s cholera outbreak, has recorded over 2,200 cases and 48 deaths, prompting authorities to strengthen containment efforts.
Vice Governor Abel do Rosário Kapitango reported 83 new cases in the last 24 hours, though the trend appears to be slightly declining.
Authorities have launched a cholera vaccination campaign, with 8,000 doses provided by the Ministry of Health (Minsa). Health teams are also conducting active case detection, supported by specialists deployed by the government.
The coastal region is the hardest hit, with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water exacerbating the crisis. Officials are relocating affected populations to safer areas, though some residents resist the move.
Namibe is Angola’s driest province, and water shortages worsen the outbreak. Currently, 40% of residents in densely populated areas lack access to water networks, prompting the government to install 31,000 new connections by 2027.
Since the epidemic began on January 7, Angola has reported over 24,000 cases and 718 deaths, making it one of Africa’s hardest-hit nations, alongside DR Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan.
